Series: Lessons in Self Management 2
Self Management : Meaning & Importance
When one speaks about management these days most of us imagine a manager in some large company managing and supervising people and ensuring that things are getting done through the day.We feel that management has to do with other people only; manging other people, supervising other people, ordering other people, appraising other people, handling other people, and so on.
In truth all management is getting things done, fulfilling a commercial task in an efficient manner, having an organizational goal , breaking it down to things to be done on a daily basis and then ensuring the daily requirements are met as per plan.
So, where does self management come in over here and what's its' importance in general management or day to day activities? That's the question many would like answered. And that's exactly what I attempt to do here.
Self Management would mean a host of different things to different people. For a student self management would mean being able to manage his time in such a way that he could complete all his assignments as per deadline. For a house wife it would mean being able to manage her time as well as her resources to complete all her house hold chores in time, prepare healthy and tasty food inside the monthly budget and probably save some money at the month's end. For a football team manager self management would mean being able to have enough time and energy at the end of the day to think about team combinations, building a team strategy and ensuring that personal problems do not come in the way of his strategic thinking.
For me self management is the skill, ability and acumen to plan my day for successfully completing my to do list and de-cluttering my mind of useless thoughts and energy sapping negativity.
The most important point to understand when it comes to self management is that; if one is unable to manage himself the management of others is a pipe dream. And also the key to self management lies in acknowledging the fact that all forms of management requires the proper use of time.
People say that one must learn to manage time. I say that it's not possible for us to manage time because it is absolutely impossible to do so knowing the fact that no one has control on time , it just keeps going away and you can do nothing to stop it.
So self management is imperative, essential and the source from where success begins. So my tip to everyone concerned about self management would be :
- Do not try to control time , instead try to plan your activities and execute your plans flawlessly and ruthlessly.
- While planning your activities make to-do-lists and ensure that you run your day accordingly
- Ensure that you make less or no mistakes at all, because rectifying mistakes consumes priceless time and saps you of your energy.
Try this till the next article comes in a few days.

Startup India !
Great Opportunity for Everyone to become Self-Employed!
Start-up India campaign has been launched by the honorable prime minister with a lot to look forward to in the coming few days. In case the promises made during the launching ceremony are fulfilled many aspiring entrepreneurs; young and otherwise; stand to benefit.
The important question each person animated and happy with this announcement needs to ask himself or herself is what is my true calling, do I have all the ingredients to become successful as an entrepreneur or should I look at making a career in an organization and take up a good job?
Everyone feels in one corner of his heart or another , that it is better to have your own business than to work for someone else. But the reality is that the grass always seems greener on the other side. Having said that I would also like to add that starting a business is no child's play because there are many things at stake when a person takes up the challenge of becoming an entrepreneur.
As you know that time and tide wait for no man and once you waste time on starting a business and trying to make it work and if it fails shutting it down and then looking for an alternate career, this situation has potential to destroy a persons future .
So common sense would say that if you have the inclination, passion, skills, patience and most of all the financial resources ; to first invest in the business idea and then to fund the expenses until you hit profits; than and only than take the plunge into 'businessdom'.
Prepare yourself well. at least do a proper market research, talk to experts and experienced people in business and then make a meticulous business plan.
The more time you spend on planning , evaluating and using your foresight the better will be the outcome of your foray into entrepreneurship.
Wishing you all the luck you may need!

NEW AGE SUCCESS MANTRA!
S U C C E S S ... What is the secret? That's the million dollar question!
First of all its important to understand what success means to you. To one person it may be amassing lots and lots of money, while to another it may just mean earning enough to take care of the basic needs of his or her family.
Once you have defined your meaning of success, you are ready for the next step. The next step is to set a goal (short /medium/long term, all three are essential) based on your definition of success.
Well, this is certainly half the battle won because once you know where you are going , its just a matter of taking the right road to your destination. In case you skip the vital cog in the wheel and don't set a proper goal, you are doomed to fail.
Now you must have three simple but critical things with you to ensure success; and they are:
1. Common Sense
2. A Sense of Urgency
3. Experience
Common sense, because the small things matter the most. It's said; a small leak will sink the largest of ships. So , common sense is one of the critical pillars of success. If you lack it , acquire it; and if you have it, use it.
Similarly , it is said , time and tide wait for no man. This statement has become totally relevant with respect to the fast changing modern world. Either you execute your ideas and plans right now or be prepared to fail, and this would apply to every aspect of life not only business and career but normal life situations too. Think about it. But, ensure you execute, implement and do it now, just do it , and Nike is so right...
Experience is acquired through time. That does not mean you cannot expedite the process of acquiring experience. Just speak to experienced people, take their advice, keep your eyes and ears open and mouth shut.
Do all this and succeed in whatever you want to achieve in life.
SOFT SKILLS:
What – Why – How of soft skills
A
lot has been written & spoken about Soft Skills and its Importance.
Here is a simple explanation as to: what are 'Soft Skills', why they are
important and how can you learn or improve this set of skills.
What are soft skill skills?
“Soft Skills” are now buzz
words used profusely throughout industry across the globe. But, if you
ask someone to define “soft skills”, they would probably give you unclear,
inaccurate and mostly vague definitions.
Simply put ‘Soft
Skills’ may be defined or understood as a cluster or collection of personality
traits, behaviors, habits, skills, characteristics that help people to execute
every day work in a professional, profitable and useful way. It would be appropriate
to add that a person’s attitude towards work and life, ease of communication,
work ethic and emotional intelligence, all put together and put to use in daily
work and life provide proof of possession of soft skills in a person.
There are broadly five
segments of skills essential to success in a career, which include both hard and
soft skills:-
Hard Skills: – These are a set of trade skills and learned
expertise through some kind of training or education, for example, software
programming, accounts or mechanical engineering which we need to perform our
job.
Soft Skills: - For easy
understanding, soft skills may also be called people skills as most of the time a person in business
or career interacts in more ways than one with people. Some examples of soft skills or people skills would
include communication and interpersonal skills and expertise including skills to manage well office politics, office
work flow and interaction at different levels.
So having a good idea may not be enough, but
communicating the idea effectively to the right set of people
and being able to brush aside question marks and make the idea implementable is
more important.
There are a number of soft skills or people skills that one
should develop during the course of one’s career. Being good
at these skills will enable you to not only engage but also influence, and acquire
the support of other team members and clients.
1.
Soft
Skills – A variety of Self management skills are also required for career growth and success. These skills
help a person to manage a person’s self- perception and also one’s response to uncomfortable
situations both, in personal and professional lif. For example,
§ It would be difficult for a person to succeed
if he or she lacked in confidence to do the things that would help career
progression.
§ Also, can a person succeed if he or she finds it
difficult to control his or her emotions, like anger or impulsiveness during stressful situations?
The list of self management skills would include being confident at all times ,
having patience while dealing with difficult people and emotional control to take the right decision, to better manage stress.
2. Attitude Toward Work
– This part of personal skills would refer to one’s temperament and perspective
towards work, clients and colleagues. Traits like personal work ethic, positive frame of
mind, and the eagerness to learn make up the list of attributes basically valued
by most good companies globally.
3. Professional Behavior – This list includes basic business
etiquette and behavioral traits like, the way we dress for work, how we
generally speak to our colleagues and business associates at different levels , mostly how we behave in our work environment.
Why
are Soft Skills or People Skills important?
So, in case you are a
businessman or a professional or a careerist; whatever is you profession the
common denominator of all business is people, your relation with them and your
communication with one or all of them.
So the skills which
make it easier for you to conduct yourself professionally and personally are
relevant and essential in each transaction, communication, and process leading
to business and personal success.
Hence such skills are your keys to success without
which the door to success stays shut whatever you my do.
How
to develop soft skills or people skills?
Man, someone has said,
is a creature of habit. Everything in life we do or the things we mostly do are
in one way or another because of habit.
So, one easy way to
develop soft skills would be to first find out the skills required for success
in your field and in case you do not possess these traits set about learning
them till the time they become second nature and a part of your habits.
Wish you all the best!

I N T E R V I E W S U C C E S S WHY CANDIDATES FAIL TO CLEAR THE PERSONAL INTERVIEW
There may be a range of reasons for failure in personal interviews. One candidate may not make the same mistake as another. Yet there are a few mistakes commonly committed by the majority of candidates who are unable to impress the interviewer.
I have tried to list below some of the critical mistakes committed by candidates which lead to interview failure:
1. The " Resume Factor ": During the last 15-20 years I have had the opportunity to take hundreds of personal interviews in my capacity; previously as a senior manager; and currently as a recruitment consultant and as an employer for my various businesses, and have found the "Resume" being utterly disregarded as an essential part of the process of finding and acquiring a job.
The most common mistakes which totally 'put off' the interviewer and certainly do close the door on any chance of being selected are as under:
1. Spelling Mistakes of even common words
2. A long, wordy and pointless objective (most candidates don't remember its contents)
3. Incomplete information regarding previous employment
4. Name of past employer and dates of employment missing
5. Total misplacement of critical information
6. Resume not updated
7. Last but not the least, a pointlessly long resume full of unimportant information
2. Discipline:. Rather, the lack of discipline is displayed by a large number of candidates before , during and post interview. Some of the really irritating things candidates do, include:
1. Reach the interview venue late
2. Dress informally (No need to stress the fact that no one wears a tie to an interview anymore)
3. Forget to carry a copy of their resume
4. Unreadable/ Filthy copy of resume
5. Enter the cabin without knocking
6. Never greet the interviewer and sit across the table without taking permission
7. Don't hand over a copy of the resume to the interviewer until asked
8. The list is long and I can go on and on...
I personally feel that the tone of the interview is set by the above given points. It's a matter of the first impression. Either you get it right or you don't. The important thing is that these little mistakes or irritants are under the control of the candidate and with a little bit of forethought and planning you can easily make a positive , lasting and critically important impression on the employer and move one step up in your goal of attaining the job you want.
Good Luck !
