I N T E R V I E W S U C C E S S WHY CANDIDATES FAIL TO CLEAR THE PERSONAL INTERVIEW
There may be a range of reasons for failure in personal interviews. One candidate may not make the same mistake as another. Yet there are a few mistakes commonly committed by the majority of candidates who are unable to impress the interviewer.
I have tried to list below some of the critical mistakes committed by candidates which lead to interview failure:
1. The " Resume Factor ": During the last 15-20 years I have had the opportunity to take hundreds of personal interviews in my capacity; previously as a senior manager; and currently as a recruitment consultant and as an employer for my various businesses, and have found the "Resume" being utterly disregarded as an essential part of the process of finding and acquiring a job.
The most common mistakes which totally 'put off' the interviewer and certainly do close the door on any chance of being selected are as under:
1. Spelling Mistakes of even common words
2. A long, wordy and pointless objective (most candidates don't remember its contents)
3. Incomplete information regarding previous employment
4. Name of past employer and dates of employment missing
5. Total misplacement of critical information
6. Resume not updated
7. Last but not the least, a pointlessly long resume full of unimportant information
2. Discipline:. Rather, the lack of discipline is displayed by a large number of candidates before , during and post interview. Some of the really irritating things candidates do, include:
1. Reach the interview venue late
2. Dress informally (No need to stress the fact that no one wears a tie to an interview anymore)
3. Forget to carry a copy of their resume
4. Unreadable/ Filthy copy of resume
5. Enter the cabin without knocking
6. Never greet the interviewer and sit across the table without taking permission
7. Don't hand over a copy of the resume to the interviewer until asked
8. The list is long and I can go on and on...
I personally feel that the tone of the interview is set by the above given points. It's a matter of the first impression. Either you get it right or you don't. The important thing is that these little mistakes or irritants are under the control of the candidate and with a little bit of forethought and planning you can easily make a positive , lasting and critically important impression on the employer and move one step up in your goal of attaining the job you want.
Good Luck !
